Where will it degrade?
• In a landfill or compost area
• When buried in, or in contact with, soil
• With litter
• When trapped in Erosion or Agricultural netting or film
Where won’t it degrade?
• In your warehouse
• On the store shelf
• In the consumer’s office or home
What does Buckeye Bio leave behind?
• Aerobic: in an environment exposed to atmospheric oxygen (litter or composting):
* Biomass (a rich, compost-like material with nutrients)
* Carbon Dioxide
* Water
• Anaerobic: in an environment without exposure to atmospheric oxygen (typical landfill):
* Biomass
* Carbon Dioxide
* Some Water
* Methane
How long does it take to break down?
Buckeye Bio degrades in much in the same way that a stick or tree branch does, breaking down over a period of 9 months to 5 years. We think you’ll agree that this is an environmental bargain… especially when compared to the unknown breakdown time of other modern plastic materials!
What about the ink used to print on the material?
As a pioneer in the use of water-based inks in the late Eighties, Buckeye Packaging has been green for twenty years. These inks contain less than 20% of the chemical solvents found in normal solvent-based inks used to print on polyethylene. The use of water-based inks has allowed Buckeye to reduce our emissions of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) by approximately 85%. VOCs are a major component of ground-level ozone (smog) as well a contributor to global warming.
